Block paving driveways in Eastbourne
Hard wearing, easy to repair, and available in permeable versions.
Block paving uses concrete or clay blocks laid on sand over a compacted sub-base, with kerbs to hold the edges. It is one of the most common drives on Eastbourne's family estates, from Hampden Park to Langney.
Drainage matters
Standard block paving is not permeable. The drive should fall towards a channel drain at your boundary, feeding a soakaway in your garden, so no water runs onto the pavement. Permeable block paving lets water through the joints instead and avoids the channel.
Eastbourne points
- Soakaways work well in chalk but may not in waterlogged ground on the Levels; your installer may suggest a permeable design or a different outfall
- Clay pavers in warm reds suit Old Town and Upperton streets; grey concrete blocks suit newer homes
- Weeds and moss in the joints are the main upkeep; resanding every few years keeps it tidy
Rough cost
| Per m², supplied and laid | £65 to £110 |

| Time on site | 3 to 7 days |
Breaking out an old drive, drainage and a dropped kerb add to this. See the cost guide.
Common questions
Can a single block be replaced?
Yes, blocks can be lifted and relaid, which makes repairs after drain work easy.
Is permeable block paving more expensive?
A little, because the base uses open graded stone, but it can save the cost of channels and soakaways.
